Port KC has officially announced the planning and development of a massive $100 billion data center campus in the Northland area, a project internally known as Project Kestrel. This immense campus will span 379 acres within the KCI 29 Logistics Park, an industrial megasite constructed in 2023 that is strategically located adjacent to the KCI airport. Project Kestrel is designed to house six hyperscale data centers, ultimately encompassing up to 1.8 million square feet of space.
The construction of Project Kestrel is planned as a multi-phase development that will be executed over the next 20 years, with the construction of Phase One set to commence in 2026. Financial backing for the project involves bonds that will remain in effect for a term of 35 years. This development promises substantial economic returns, expected to generate over $110 million in new tax revenue across all phases over the duration of the bond term. Furthermore, a foundational payment of $2.62 million is designated to be paid within the first five years to support the Northland school districts’ new Northland Career Center.
Beyond tax revenue, Project Kestrel represents a significant investment in local human capital, with an estimated $15.75 million dedicated to programs aimed at training the next generation of the area’s workforce. The completed data center campus is anticipated to create approximately 50 high-paying jobs per phase. These positions are projected to offer substantial compensation, with average annual salaries exceeding $100,000.
