In Bremen, Germany, data center operator Sievers runs a Tier 4-certified facility in a repurposed nuclear shelter. The 2,000-square-meter (21,527-square-foot), windowless facility was reportedly built in 1944 as a bomb shelter. During the Cold War, it was converted into a nuclear shelter before German construction company Carbocon helped transform the site into a data center. At the time, it was operated by colocation provider ColocationIX.
